I had hiked Mt. Rose earlier in the year, and had been looking for the opportunity to come back and try the route in the winter.
I had filled up my camelback bladder before leaving, but accidentally set it down on the bite valve and it drained while I was driving to the trailhead. I figured that the recent warm weather would generate some snowmelt somewhere along the trail, but it turned out to be a very dry day...
A summer variant of this route can be found
here.

The non-wilderness portion of the trail had been well traveled by snowmobiles and had a well consolodated surface that didn't require donning snowshoes

The right turn into the Rose Wilderness granted a first view of the peak. No snomobile tracks after this point, but there were signs of several skiier and snowshoers since last snowfall.
