Topo and GPS tracks for today's failed summit of Moapa Peak. About 6mi with 3300ft of elevation gain.

Peak was about an hour north of Vegas on I-15.

Took exit 100 from I-15 for the ghost town of Carp and stopped to take this shot of the peak. Little lingering cloud cover on the summit.

The dirt road headed north from right near the exit. Trailhead was a little over 8 miles back. Road was in reasonable shape but like most of the NV roads I wouldn't want to try it in a low clearance 2WD.

The summitpost route description said look for "some sort of large metal rusted thing"- which I spotted off to the left. Parked here.

Continued on the road on foot into the gap in the ridge. Clouds still hanging onto to the summit of Moapa about a mile or two to the north.

The road threaded the gap in the ridge and then turned for a steep climb to the right. Probably could have gotten my Outback through this section if I had chanced it. There were a number of cave formations on the walls of the ridge.

Through the ridge and into the wash marked on the map as "Jacks Pockets". The road headed west from here and there was a turnout with a couple of campfire rings and a string of wilderness boundary signs.

I picked out what looked like Peak 4542 (center frame) across the wash and started north.

There was no discernible use trail across the wash and I angled for the canyon to the right of Peak 4542.

At the base of 4542, the slope dipped into a more proper canyonbottom wash that wound around the peak to the east.
