Back in the saddle and taking one last peek back up at the Black Butte summit.
5/25/06 Update from Paul Danielson on on the route to Black Butte:
We had read John Fedak's fine account of his summiting hike to Black Butte (February? of this year) on his website. We fully expected to have a full-fledged brush-bust from the end of the old firebreak to the ridge itself. We were surprised and pleased to find a well clipped trail down to the saddle, through it, and beyond. I had brought along my loppers, but did not really have to do more than some fine-tuning. Evidently, someone has taken this on as a pet project. We did notice an entry in the register by "Friends of Black Butte" but with no date. Perhaps they are the ones. Altogether there were five entries, including yours and ours. The other three, Fedak, "MJ" (he left a joint in the register!), and the "Friends" group -- all appear to be this year. So, I don't know if you experienced the same trail cut we did, but it really made the trip a piece of cake. The only brush we had to negotiate was the last 30-40 yards to the top. Even that appeared to have some old push throughs. We followed John's suggestion to follow the ridge (both ways) and avoid a brushy side-slope approach.
