Topo and GPS track of todays 11mi, 4000ft elevation gain route. (GPX file is here). This was my 3rd visit to North Chalone and 2nd to South Chalone.

First one in the parking lot again this year. Little bit warmer than the subfreezing temps I encountered on my last visit. There were a couple acorn woodpeckers drinking from the water fountain when I drove up.

Slightly above freezing and there was ice on the ground as I hit the trail. Was wearing short sleeves and briefly considered putting on a jacket, but figured (correctly) that I'd just be taking it off once the sun came out.

Took the route through the Bear Gulch cave on the outbound leg. The lower portion was open, but the upper portion was closed for the season to protect the resident bats.

The cave isn't a real cave- its a talus cave (i.e. a canyon that has boulders covering the top) There was enough light that I didn't need to break out my headlamp, though this required feeling my way along in the dark for a bit.

Almost no water in the stream today. Been through here in the past where this part is flooded. The stairs started at the back of this flat section.
